Between residential project Suikerpark and business park Suikerfabriek, we find a nature reserve of no less than 15.3ha: Suikerwater. It is a unique piece of nature consisting mainly of open water and marshland.
Suikerwater derives its shape and quality from the rich industrial past of the former Sugar Factory. To strengthen the natural values present and prevent the drying up of the nature area in the coming years, WVI drew up a nature management plan in close consultation with the city of Veurne, Natuurpunt Westkust and the Agentschap voor Natuur en Bos.
Climate-proof nature
The Suikerwater nature reserve acts as a natural water buffer (during heavy rainfall) for the nearby housing project and business park. A first step in optimising these natural values and combating drought is to scrutinise the water management so that water is less easily drained, but instead retained longer in the nature reserve. "WVI has invested heavily in the reconstruction and deepening of the existing basins and the reed marsh present," says Geert Sanders, general manager WVI. "The many efforts did not harm the nature reserve: Suikerwater is an important breeding and wintering place for numerous marsh and water birds."
Nature-oriented recreation
With two new cycle junctions and walking trails, Suikerwater will undoubtedly become a walker's and cyclist's paradise. Clear signage will indicate which paths are available for walkers and/or cyclists, where sheep are grazing and the obligation to keep dogs on a leash. In this way, we protect the most vulnerable areas and create sufficient breeding and wintering places for the birds. Moreover, we use smart tracking lighting in the nature reserve to keep it as dark as possible for the animals present here.
Investing in more nature (experience)
In recent years, several nature conservation projects have been carried out to give nature every chance. For instance, nature lovers can enjoy one of the three bird-watching walls, children can use a fishing net to view underwater life thanks to a new platform and cyclists and hikers can take a break on the new benches.
Strong partnership
With combined forces, partners WVI, Stad Veurne, Natuurpunt Westkust, nature working group De Kerkuil and the Veurnse MiNaRaad succeed in securing the area for the future.
